UniLife

We created UniLife, an app that puts everything happening in a student's city in the one place they check most often: their phone. Student events, discounts, and tickets to university hockey games. Another layer of student life, available to current and former students alike.
The project is backed by the University Ice Hockey League, but the target audience reaches well beyond hockey fans. It's students in general — both current students and alumni. The client had two goals: to build a communication channel that brings students relevant content and an overview of what's going on in their city, and at the same time to open up space for partners to reach this group. In return, those partners offer benefits and discounts.
We chose a solution built on Compose Multiplatform, which covers both Android and iOS from a single codebase. To the user, UniLife is one app. In reality, it's powered by several interconnected systems: ticket sales, university identity, bank identity, email and notifications, and things like maps. These services existed separately on the client's side, so we built a middle layer between them that holds them together and delivers one consistent set of content to the app.
Students buy tickets directly on their phones and then scan a QR code on entry. Discounts and benefits get unlocked. A partner can set conditions on a discount: only for verified students, only for clients of a particular bank, or only for someone who has a ticket to a given game. It's a small rules engine that the client configures in the admin panel themselves, with no need to touch the code.
The client manages the entire content side themselves through a CMS. This gives them autonomy, which we back up with technical support, for example, automatic translation into English running in the background.
Students got a single place they turn to both for information and for offers worth their while. The client keeps content firmly in their own hands, and partners have a direct channel to the student community. Filters and a calendar make it easy to find your way around, a growing range of benefits gives people a reason to keep coming back, and ticket sharing strengthens the app's community feel.
On top of that, the solution has been built for growth into other cities (and other universities) from the very start. Today it's a matter of configuration, not new development.

UniLife is an app for students who want to stay on top of what's happening in their city. And who want to be there for it.

The app grows over time, and we designed it so that each new release builds on the previous one, not against it.
